A Navy SEAL reveals what ‘American Sniper’ got wrong

Needless to say, politics can bring out a lot of emotion. But so can watching someone in a convincing role. And when those two things combine, it can result in what happened on Wednesday night, when a group of people saw Bradley Cooper in attendance at the Democratic National Convention.

Cooper was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in 2014's "American Sniper." The war movie was a hit among conservative Republicans, so some of them lashed out on the internet after seeing Cooper at the DNC:

In real life, Cooper supports the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and donated to Hillary Clinton's run for US Senate as well as her 2008 presidential candidacy.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are starring in a remake of a famous musical

Bradley Cooper is getting his first directing job, and Lady Gaga is stepping up as an actress.

The two will star in a remake of the musical "A Star Is Born," with Cooper directing. Warner Bros. gave the green light to the production, which will start in early 2017, Deadline reports.

"A Star Is Born" has been made as a movie several times. In the 1976 film, Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson starred in the story of a young woman who finds her star rising as her mentor's declines.

Cooper has been eyeing the project as his first directing project since working with Warner Bros. on 2014's "American Sniper," and the studio was apparently won over by a chemistry test between Cooper and Gaga, who recently starred on FX's American Horror Story."

Gaga will compose and perform new music for the film.

“For those of us lucky enough to watch him work as an actor and producer, it has been clear that Bradley would make this transition to director,” Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman said, according to Deadline. “We are honored that he is doing it, here, at his home — Warner Bros. — and with Lady Gaga as a collaborator and costar. The world is in for a treat as these great artists craft an all-new vision of 'A Star Is Born.'”

  • Lady Gaga debuted a new tattoo on Instagram on Thursday.
  • Tattoo artist Winter Stone designed the body art, which features a rose going up Gaga's spine with the words "la vie en rose" on the sides.
  • It's a nod to the song "La Vie en Rose," which Gaga sings in the film "A Star is Born."
  • She also debuted a second new tattoo (also designed by Stone) of musical notes spelling out "G-A-G-A" on her arm.

Lady Gaga has a lot to celebrate during this year's awards show season. She's already picked up a Golden Globe and a Grammy for her work in the Bradley Cooper-directed film "A Star is Born," and she could have a potential Oscar in her hands.

Gaga found a way to pay the ultimate tribute to the film that turned her into an Oscar-nominated actress by getting a giant tattoo in its honor.

The "Shallow" singer shared a photo of her new ink by tattoo artist Winter Stone on Instagram. The tattoo shows a giant rose going all the way up her spine with the words "la vie en rose" written on the sides.

The tattoo is a sweet nod to "A Star is Born," as Gaga's character Ally Maine sings the song "La Vie en Rose" towards the beginning of the film. It's also the song Gaga herself sang at the 2016 Parker Institute Gala, which was the moment Cooper says he knew Gaga was meant to be in the film.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow" has been everywhere since "A Star Is Born" was released in October 2018, but now Kelly Clarkson seems to have given it a fresh spin that's making people fall in love with the song all over again.

YouTube account Gaga Daily shared a video of Clarkson singing the hit song during her A Minute and a Glass of Wine tour stop in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Friday night.

"I know there's a lot of like competition always with artists in the industry, but there's a lot of us that just dig each other and we really get inspired by each other and what they're doing," Clarkson told the audience before starting the song. "And this chick is amazing. We're really different, but at the same time, we're really similar in the fact that she just loves music and that's why she's doing what she's doing."

Clarkson also went on to call Gaga "the nicest human being ever," and told the audience, "I hope I don't suck, and if I do I hope she doesn't see it."

The reactions on Twitter suggest that Clarkson's take on the song went over very well, as people are calling it "a holy experience" and "simply amazing."

Gaga and Cooper have already taken home a Grammy and Golden Globe for the song, and are nominated for Best Original Song at this year's 91st Academy Awards on February 24.

  • Bradley Cooper and Lady Gagashared a number of sweet moments at LA's Dolby Theatre on Sunday during the 2019 Oscars.
  • Both were nominated for their lead roles in "A Star Is Born."
  • They also gave an intimate performance of the film's main duet "Shallow," which won the Oscar for best original song.
  • Throughout the emotional evening, fans swooned over the duo's natural chemistry.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga shared a number of sweet moments at LA's Dolby Theatre on Sunday during the 91st annual Academy Awards.

Although neither took home an Oscar for their lead roles in "A Star Is Born"— which was also nominated for best picture, but lost to the controversial "Green Book"— the film was rightfully praised for its original song, the smash hit "Shallow." (You can see a full list of the winners here.)

Cooper and Gaga also gave an intimate performance of the award-winning duet, which reignited fans and critics' appreciation for the duo's natural chemistry.

Here's a roundup of the best photos from the two actors' emotional evening.

They walked onstage to perform "Shallow" hand-in-hand.

It's traditional for the best original song nominees to perform at the Oscars — although Kendrick Lamar and SZA turned down the opportunity to perform "All the Stars" from "Black Panther."

Cooper began to sing as Gaga made her way over to the piano.

She paused before sitting down, however, to watch her co-star croon the first verse.

Fans loved the way Gaga watched Cooper.

The look is familiar for "A Star Is Born" fans: Gaga's character Ally is head-over-heels in love with Cooper's Jackson Maine.

He had a similar look of awe.

The songstress already has multiple Grammys, including for "Shallow," but last night marked her first-ever win at the Oscars.

They got close as they performed the popular duet.

They both continued to wear their classic, minimal, black-and-white outfits from the red carpet while onstage.

Their chemistry was on full display during the emotional performance.

Gaga has repeatedly thanked Cooper for seeing her potential as an actress and casting her in the film, which he also directed.

Their intimate performance was beautiful from all angles.

"Based on the internet reaction I think legally speaking Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper have to get married and have a baby now or it's a felony," popular YouTuber Philip DeFranco wrote on Twitter.

The duo seemed touched by the audience's thunderous applause.

The crowd was so impressed with the performance, Cooper and Gaga were given two separate standing ovations.

"I've never seen that happen for any performers," noted The Hollywood Reporter's Chris Gardner.

They embraced once the song was finished.

Gaga has repeatedly gotten emotional performing "Shallow."

Cooper seemed a little relieved after the success of their performance.

Although it was not the first time the duo had performed the song live, Cooper said he was nervous for his vocals to be on display at the Oscars.

"That was terrifying," Cooper previously told E! News about singing live with Gaga in Las Vegas. "I just had to, like, zen out and just pray that I wouldn't ruin her show. Because, think about it, she just crushed it for two hours... and I thought, 'Please let me just be on pitch.'"

Gaga made sure that Cooper got his due.

Gaga would later thank Cooper in her acceptance speech for best original song.

"There's not a single person on the planet that could have sang this song with me but you," she said.

They held hands as they walked offstage.

It was a much happier conclusion than the one their characters get in the film.

And they stuck together backstage, too.

Neither returned to their seats immediately.

They remained side-by-side as they were praised and photographed by the crowd.

Gaga has said that the two shared an "instant connection," even before they began filming Jackson and Ally's love story.

At times, it seemed they couldn't take their eyes off each other.

Throughout awards season, Cooper and Gaga have become known for sharing sweet moments together.

They showed clear respect and support for each other.

Gaga recently got a tattoo to commemorate the song she originally sang for Cooper, which helped her land the role in "A Star Is Born."

  • Gaga won the Oscar for best original song for "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born."

A lot happened at the 2019 Academy Awards on Sunday, but it's safe to say that one of the most talked-about moments of the night was Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's much-anticipated performance. The two performed the award-winning single "Shallow" from their film "A Star Is Born," and their chemistry made it an unforgettable show.

But what set them up to perform so well? Perhaps it was Cooper's words to Gaga. The singer and Oscar winner revealed what Cooper said to her before going on stage and it's too sweet.

Before the duo went on stage, Cooper offered Gaga some words of encouragement

During an interview in the Oscars press room, Gaga opened up about Cooper's words of encouragement. She said, "One of the hardest things in life is to be brave enough to be yourself. I wish to everyone that is going to that celebration to feel a joy inside of them."

She added, "That's actually what Bradley said to me yesterday, right before we did our last rehearsal for this performance of 'Shallow.' He said, 'Let's just drop a little bit of joy.' And I said, 'OK.' And turns out, joy did a whole lot for me."

Following their performance, Gaga told Cooper how proud she was of him

According to People magazine, Gaga and Cooper walked off stage after a standing ovation to claps from the staff. It was then that Gaga looked at Cooper and said, "I'm so f------ proud of you!"

Later in the night, Gaga, along with her co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt, won the Oscar for best original song for "Shallow."

In her acceptance speech, she pushed her fans to be brave no matter what, saying, "I've worked hard for a long time, and it's not about winning. It's about not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it."

She also praised Cooper, saying, "Bradley, there is not a single person on the planet that could've sung this song with me but you. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you so much."

Mel B has questioned Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's relationship after the pair sung an emotional duet at the 2019 Oscars.

The "Poker Face" singer and the actor won best original song for their song "Shallow" from the "A Star Is Born" soundtrack — and performed the song onstage at the 91st annual awards show .

Appearing to invoke their "A Star Is Born" characters, the two looked at each other lovingly as they sang the track while sitting next to one another on the piano.

The performance got a significant amount of attention — especially from those watching and in the audience who felt the chemistry between Cooper and Gaga was undeniable.

However, the 44-year-old actor's girlfriend Irina Shayk was also in attendance — which prompted Mel B to raise her concerns over the appropriateness of the performance and Lady Gaga's feelings for her co-star.

Appearing on "Good Morning Britain," the Spice Girls singer told Piers Morgan: "See, I felt so uncomfortable for Bradley's girlfriend, oh my gosh."

Morgan followed up by asking: "It was the look of love, wasn't it?" to which Mel replied: "It really was and that's the whole gossip. That's the whole thing."

  • Lady Gaga has addressed the rumours that she and Bradley Cooper are romantically involved.
  • Rumours have been swirling that the pair are an item since their performance at the 2019 Oscars on Sunday.
  • However Gaga said they were just acting and they wanted people to think they were in love.

Lady Gaga has addressed the rumours that she and Bradley Cooper are an item following their performance of "Shallow" from "A Star is Born" at the 2019 Oscars.

Speculation was swirling that the pair were romantically involved after their unpalpable chemistry was on display during the rendition of the hit.

However, Gaga has now said that it was simply acting, and they wanted to create the image they were in love.

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night, the Oscar-winner gave a huge eye-roll and said: "Yes, people saw love and guess what? That's what we wanted you to see.

"This is a love song, 'Shallow.' The movie 'A Star is Born'; it's a love story."

She explained that the whole performance had been directed by Cooper, adding: "From a performance perspective it was so important to both of us that we were connected the whole time.

"When you’re singing love songs, that’s what you want people to feel.

"I'm an artist and I guess we did a good job," she joked. "Fooled ya!"

The connection between Cooper and Gaga has been one of the hottest topics discussed on the internet over the past few days since the Oscars, and even celebrities have weighed in on the matter.

Comedian and actor David Spade posted a picture on Instagram with the caption: "Is there any chance these 2 aren't f---ing?"

And Cooper's ex-wife Jennifer Esposito commented "Ha" on the post.

Cooper has been in a relationship with model Irina Shayk since 2015, and Gaga recently split from her fiancé Christian Carino.

Gaga, however, understandably has not been amused by the rumours about her relationship with Cooper.

"Social media, quite frankly, is the toilet of the internet," she told Kimmel. "And what it has done to pop culture is just abysmal."

  • Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper put on an intimate performance of "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born" at the 2019 Oscars.
  • Jennifer Esposito, Cooper's ex-wife, responded by writing "Ha" in the comments of a joke made by David Spade online about the likelihood of Cooper and Gaga sleeping together.
  • Esposito hit back at critics who attacked her for responding to the joke by telling them that there are things more important in the world.

Jennifer Esposito is hitting back at those who criticized her reaction to a joke about ex-husband Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's 2019 Oscars performance. On Instagram, comedian David Spade recently made a joke about the likelihood of Cooper and Gaga sleeping together and Esposito responded, "Ha," in the comments.

In a nearly four-minute video posted to Instagram's IGTV, the 45-year-old actress told critics that they shouldn't be concerned with her response.

"We have so many things going on in our country and our world that need attention, and I wish that you'd spend even a minute of this insanity, of nonsense on things that are really important."

She added that she responded to a joke, not the performance.

"I'm allowed to think something is funny," she said.

Spade posted a photo of Cooper and Gaga's Oscars performance on Instagram and captioned it, "Is there any chance these [two] aren't f---ing?"

Esposito simply responded, "Ha."

The actress said she didn't watch the Oscars so she hadn't even seen Gaga and Cooper's intimate performance of "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born."

"I don't know what went on," she said. "I don't care what went on. I commented on something that I thought was funny."

During an appearance on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Wednesday night, Gaga said she and Cooper wanted people to believe they were in love because "Shallow" is a love song.

"When you're singing love songs, that's what you want people to feel," she said. "I'm an artist and I guess we did a good job. Fooled ya!"

Cooper and Esposito married in December 2006 but filed for divorce just five months later.

  • The gender pay gap is just as present in Hollywood as it is in less glamorous careers.
  • According to Forbes, the top 10 highest-paid actresses earn less than 30 cents for ever dollar earned by their male counterparts.
  • Here are 11 specific examples that highlight the disparity.
  • Visit INSIDER's homepage for more.

While many actors certainly lead glamorous lives, TV and movie sets face many of the same challenges as other workplaces, including bias and inequality.

Hollywood's problem with pay disparity, for example, has received more and more attention over the last few years. The gender pay gap is a systemic, worldwide injustice, and Hollywood is no exception.

According to Forbes, the top 10 highest-paid actresses in 2018 earned less than 30 cents for ever dollar earned by their male counterparts. These actresses brought in a combined salary of $186 million, while the 10 highest-paid men earned $748.5 million.

Here are 11 specific examples of this disparity.

2018's highest-paid actress, Scarlett Johansson, made $198.5 million less than the highest-paid actor, George Clooney.

According to Forbes, Scarlett Johansson was the highest-earning actress of 2018, having brought in $40.5 million, largely thanks to her role in the MCU.

George Clooney, on the other hand, topped Forbes' list of highest-earning actors with a $239 million year.

Johansson, whose income was topped only by six male actors, was the only actress who earned as much as the men in the top 10.

Michelle Williams was paid eight times less than Mark Wahlberg for "All the Money in the World"— and 1,500 times less for reshoots.

Mark Wahlberg's salary for "All the Money in the World"was reportedly $5 million. Michelle Williams' was $625,000, though the co-stars essentially had equal screen time.

A media firestorm also ignited when it was revealed that Wahlberg demanded $1.5 million for reshoots in the wake of the Kevin Spacey scandal, while Williams was reportedly paid less than $1,000.

After backlash, Wahlberg donated his earnings from the reshoots to the Time's Up campaign.

Diane Keaton didn't receive back-end pay for "Something's Gotta Give," while Jack Nicholson did.

In her 2011 memoir "Then Again," Diane Keaton revealed that she didn't get any back-end pay for "Something's Gotta Give," meaning she wasn't paid any percentage of the movie's profits after receiving her initial salary.

Her co-star, Jack Nicholson, did — and he had a smaller role in the 2003 comedy.

Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence received 2% less than their male "American Hustle" costars.

The Sony Pictures email hack in 2014 revealed the back-end pay grade for the stars of "American Hustle."And despite sharing the same amount of screen time, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were paid 7% of the movie's profits, while Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, and Jeremy Renner each received 9%.

Adams later said she knew about the disparity, but didn't want to complain.

Lawrence, on the other hand, didn't know — and given that she had already rocketed to fame as a star of both "The Hunger Games" and "X-Men," her lack of compensation is even more shocking.

"When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks, I didn't get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself,"Lawrence later wrote in an open letter. "I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn't want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don't need."

Jessica Chastain was paid about $1.75 million for "The Martian," while Matt Damon reportedly earned as much as $25 million.

Jessica Chastain told Huffpost that she made less than a quarter of her widely reported salary for "The Martian."

"And so people are already saying, 'Well, she's making a lot less than her male co-stars because she's making this.' I made less than a quarter of that in reality, so there is a huge wage gap in the industry," she said.

According to The Playlist, that puts her actual salary at approximately $1.75 million.

Chastain's c-ostar Matt Damon reportedly made anywhere from $15 to $25 million — a pay discrepancy that doesn't match their screen time discrepancy.

Gillian Anderson was offered "half" of what her co-star, David Duchovny, was offered to return to "The X-Files."

Anderson told the Hollywood Reporter that "as usual,"she was offered half of Duchovny's salary for the "X-Files" revival.

According to industry sources, Anderson eventually was paid the same amount as Duchovny for the six-episode run — but considering she fought for equal pay during the show's initial run, Anderson was hardly pleased she had to renegotiate at all.

"People have said to me, 'I can't believe that happened, how did you feel about it, that is insane,'"she told Vanity Fair, referring to the initial equal pay dispute. "And my response always was, 'That was then, this is now.' And then it happened again! I don't even know what to say about it."

Charlize Theron was offered far less than Chris Hemsworth to return for the "Snow White and the Huntsman" sequel.

Charlize Theron, who stars as the evil Queen Ravenna in "Snow White and The Huntsman," was offered significantly less than Chris Hemsworth (the Huntsman) to return for the film's sequel.

She managed renegotiate her salary to match Hemsworth's.

"I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes," she told Elle. "They did not fight it. And maybe that's the message: That we just need to put our foot down. This is a good time for us to bring this to a place of fairness, and girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing. It doesn't mean that you hate men. It means equal rights. If you're doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way."

Amanda Seyfried has received just 10% of what her male co-star was paid.

In a 2015 interview with The Sunday Times, Amanda Seyfried revealed that she had been paid just 10% of the salary of her male co-star for a big-budget movie. She clarified that she and her co-star were "even in status."

Seyfried typically stars in rom-coms, which means she nearly always has equal screen time as her male counterparts — and sometimes more.

Fans believe she was referring to either 2010's "Dear John," with Channing Tatum, or 2011's "In Time," with Justin Timberlake.

Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith for their roles on "The Crown," as Queen Elizabeth II and the queen's husband, respectively.

Producers of Netflix's hit show "The Crown"infamously confirmed that Claire Foy, who played the titular queen, was paid less than Matt Smith, who played Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip on the show's first two seasons.

The producers later apologized to both actors, and Smith spoke out in support of equal pay.

"I'm not surprised that people saw [the report] and went, 'Oh, that's a bit odd,'"Foy told Entertainment Weekly. "But I know that Matt feels the same that I do, that it's odd to find yourself at the center [of a story] that you didn't particularly ask for."

Ashton Kutcher was paid three times more than Natalie Portman for "No Strings Attached."

In a 2017 interview with Marie Claire, Natalie Portman revealed that she was paid just a fraction of Ashton Kutcher's salary for their rom-com "No Strings Attached," in which they both play lead roles and share a majority of scenes.

"I knew and I went along with it because there's this thing with 'quotes' in Hollywood," she explained. "His [quote] was three times higher than mine so they said he should get three times more. I wasn't as pissed as I should have been. I mean, we get paid a lot, so it's hard to complain, but the disparity is crazy."

"Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar," she continued. "In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar."

Ellen Pompeo, the titular role on "Grey's Anatomy," was paid less than Patrick Dempsey, who played her love interest.

Though Ellen Pompeo is now one of the highest-earning actors on TV, thanks to a renewed "Grey's Anatomy" contract in late 2017, she was once paid less than her co-star Patrick Dempsey— on a show named after her character.

"At one point, I asked for $5,000 more than him just on principle, because the show is 'Grey's Anatomy' and I'm Meredith Grey. They wouldn't give it to me," Pompeo told The Hollywood Reporter.

"And I could have walked away, so why didn't I? It's my show; I'm the No. 1," she continued. "I'm sure I felt what a lot of these other actresses feel: Why should I walk away from a great part because of a guy? You feel conflicted but then you figure, 'I'm not going to let a guy drive me out of my own house.'"

In a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Bradley Cooper dished on how he plans to keep "A Star Is Born" alive by reuniting with Lady Gaga during a special event for fans.

Bradley Cooper impressed everyone with his singing chops in "A Star Is Born," but that doesn't mean he'll be hitting the road with Lady Gaga to continue promoting the movie's music. Instead, he has another plan to reunite with his costar and keep the buzz about the movie going!

"What I thought would be a cool thing to do is, one night, is a live reading of the movie, of the script, and sing all the songs as you're reading the script," Bradley explained on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show.""Like at the Hollywood Bowl or something. That would be cool, right?" UMMM, yes!

Keep in mind, there are no actual plans for this production at this time, but Bradley has officially put it into the universe. During the interview, he also opened up about how nervous he was to perform "Shallow" with Gaga at the Oscars in the days leading up to the show. However, he admitted that right before the performance he was chill because of how hard he worked to get to that point. "I just worked really hard and Lady Gaga is so supportive," he gushed. "But it was terrifying, absolutely. Because I'm not a singer and didn't sing before this movie. So it was really crazy. But it just shows you … if you do work really hard and you're with supportive people, then you can do things you never dreamed possible."

A Star is Born was nominated for eight awards at the Oscars, and took home one win for best original song. Bradley and Gaga also won for best pop/duo performance at the Grammys, while "Shallow" took home best song written for visual media."

In addition to starring and singing in "A Star Is Born," Bradley also directed the movie. Watch his full interview with Ellen above!
